The requirements for the B.A. in Media Study
- 48 credit hours in Media Study course work; students select either the Production or Critical Studies curricula Majors have 4 open electives in Media Study to compliment their concentration — students should choose Media Study courses outside their concentration requirements that appeal to their interests. This is an opportunity to explore other media concentrations–film, digital, video, documentary, critical studies–apart from what you are studying. UB requires 120 total credit hours, which includes degree requirements, General Education courses, and open elective credit.
- A traditional minor in another discipline (English, Music, Theater, etc.) or “virtual minor” (see below)
The Virtual Minor
The virtual minor consists of 18 credit hours outside of Media Study. Students often select courses from Art, English, Computer Science, Marketing, Economics, etc, but any department is acceptable provided the courses in some way enhance the Media Study degree. Students will have to make an argument for their selection of classes. Courses that meet this requirement cannot also count towards general education requirements.
Out of the 18 credit hours (typically 6 courses), the courses must meet this criteria:
- 2 courses at the 200 level
- 4 courses at the 300/400 level
Transfer Student Information
Special note to Transfer Students: virtual minor courses must transfer in to meet the criteria listed above. Some Associates degrees will count towards this requirement, see the department advisor. The department will not accept transfer credit for more than 1/3 of the overall credits required for the major. Acceptance into the department is based on a space-available basis and is strictly limited.
