PhD Candidate in Media Study Kalpana Subramanian presents Material Universe, a program of experimental films on June 17th at 4pm at The Bakery Atlanta. The program includes films by Eric Stewart, Taylor Dunne, Anna Kipervaser, Rhys Morgan, Ramey Newell, Erin Espelie, and Subramanian and will be followed by a Q & A with Subramanian.

PhD student Kalpana Subramanian Presenting at SCMS and screening two films at PIX Film Gallery in Toronto
Kalpana Subramanian will be presenting a paper at the SCMS conference in Toronto as part of a panel on Embodied Filmmaking Practices in Experimental Cinema on March 14, 2018. Two films of hers will also be screened at PIX Film Gallery the same evening in a film program titled Scaling the Insect curated by Erin Espelie.

Kalpana Subramanian’s Short Film “Empyrean” will be displayed on the University of Mary Washington, VA Media Wall Through Feb 2018
Empyrean a short experimental film by Kalpana Subramanian will be displayed on the University of Mary Washington, Media Wall through the month of Feb 2018. The Media Wall is a one-of-a-kind exhibition space located in the atrium of the Hurley Convergence Center at the University of Mary Washington in Fredericksburg, VA. The wall is over two stories tall and is comprised of 43 separate Laser Phosphor Display tiles.

A Dialogue of Dissonance by PhD Candidate Kalpana Subramanian (from her series Light Mediated: Eyes on Brakhage) has been officially selected to screen at Digital Anthropologies /Anthropologies Numériques #5 (France, November 2017; see the full program here (pdf)) and at Crossing the Screen (UK, November 2017).
The film was also screened recently at Dobra International Festival of Experimental Cinema (Brazil), ULTRAcinema MX (Mexico) and Experimental Superstars 2017 (Serbia).

Open Studios is an opportunity for the public to meet the next generation of artists at UB. Students in UB’s graduate programs in Art and Media Study invite the public into their studios to engage with their work on more intimate terms. This year’s event is distributed throughout the Center for the Arts on North Campus, and includes a program of film screenings and performances throughout the evening. We’re aiming to create a dynamic event that attracts members of the local arts community as well as the public at large and introduces the incredible work our graduates are making to a broad and diverse audience.

‘FORGING AMERICAN: Art in the Workings of an Asian American Rust Belt’ is a survey exhibition exploring relationships between contemporary Asian American identity and settlement in Rust Belt cities of the US. The show is curated by is curated by Van Tran Nguyen and Natalie Fleming and features the work by 17 artists working in a variety of styles and media.
PhD Candidate Kalpana Subramanian’s locative media piece titled Dislocations, which was recently presented at Squeaky Wheel Film and Media Art Center, will feature as part of this group show. An opening reception will take place on Friday, September 8, 2017 from 8-11p at Big Orbit Gallery. The show is on till November 17, 2017.

PhD candidate Kalpana Subramanian’s short film Empyrean has been selected to screen at The Public Cinema program, Flicker and Wow curated by Paul Harill and Darren Hughes for the Big Ears Festival, Knoxville TN. The screening will take place at the Knoxville Museum of Art on March 26, 2017 at the Knoxville Museum of Art at 1:30 P.M.
