The Critical Studies Concentration

Media Study majors who select the Critical Studies concentration will take courses in history, analysis, and theory, which address the complex interrelationship between artistic practice and theoretical discourses. Concepts in film theory, digital media design, the role of the machine, semiotics, political theory and cultural studies are addressed through examination of works, critiques and theoretical texts. Students are required to take at least one basic production course to underscore the relationship between production and theory. Media Study is a humanistic discipline, and Critical Studies is a concentration specifically situated within this context. The concentration is designed for students who are devoted to developing their intellectual and rhetorical faculties and who are especially interested in film theory, media analysis, and cultural theory. Many students in Critical Studies find rewarding careers in education, law, journalism, business, the entertainment industry, and other such vocational areas that value strong writing skills and anaylitical ability.

You may print this sheet out for your own advising purposes and check off courses as you take them (or plan to take them) to fulfill the 48 credit hours required for the major.
