Message from the Chair
The Department of Media Study has received worldwide recognition for its seminal role in the development of the field and its 35-year tradition of bringing distinguished international media artists, scientists, and scholars together to provide an unparalleled, stimulating educational environment.
Our program integrates theory and practice through a global and transdisciplinary approach in film, video, digital art, and to expand our student's understanding of the world, particularly the social, political and natural environments. Within our classrooms and laboratories, an exciting dialog is taking place that connects people and cultures.
We welcome applications from creative individuals from all backgrounds and across diverse fields. We especially encourage those from traditionally under-represented communities and students with more than one area of education or special life experience. All our students are encouraged to create individualized programs that reflect their interests. Media and architecture or theater, cultural theory and documentary, or poetry, film and dance are just a few examples our students can explore.
The University at Buffalo is the premiere research institution of the State University of New York and ranks in the top ten in the U.S. in international enrollment. Buffalo is home to the world famous Albright-Knox Art Gallery, Niagara Falls, and has some of the most beautiful architecture in the US. It sits at the western edge of New York State on the international border to Canada, with Toronto only a 1.5 hour drive, and New York City and Chicago only a 1 hour plane flight away. Buffalo also has a lively arts and new media scene, with many opportunities for students to view, discuss, and show work in galleries, theaters and alternative venues.
We invite you to apply to our program!

Professor and Chair, Department of Media Study
