    Richard Foreman

The Center for the Moving Image will host one of America’s pre-eminent playwrights and directors, Richard Foreman, and his collaborator Sophie Haviland as we participate in their international film and theater initiative, The Bridge Project.

As a theater pioneer and founder and director of the Ontological-Hysteric Theater in New York City, Mr. Foreman has received numerous awards including ten Obie Awards, a MacArthur Genius Fellowship, a “Lifetime Achievement in the Theater” award from the National Endowment for the Arts, and the PEN American Center Master American Dramatist Award.

Sophie Haviland is a writer, director and producer. She has been working in experimental theater, performance and film since 1992 when she moved to New York from Australia. Her film and theater work has been created in collaborations with artists in the US, Europe and Australia. Haviland was the Managing Director of the Ontological Theater from 1993-1999, producing Foreman’s NY productions and international tours. Since 2004, they have worked together on The Bridge Project. Haviland also created the OBIE award-winning Blueprint Series, and several other theater productions and performance festivals in New York.

The Bridge Project has traveled to nine countries creating the β€œraw” art material for an international online database. All material is made available to participating artists in the project to use in their own work and in collaboration with other Bridge artists. While in Buffalo, Foreman and Haviland will conduct an intensive two-week theater/film workshop creating seed material for The Bridge with students in the Media Study and Theater departments at UB. Foreman will also present his work at a public screening on Monday, March 23rd, 2009 at the Market Arcade Theater at 7p.m.
