Application Process and Entry Requirements
APPLICATION DEADLINE: JANUARY 5, 2012.
Completed applications and portfolios are due January 5. Priority for departmental scholarship funds and assistantships will be given to applications received by January 5. Applications received after January 5 will only be considered on a space available basis. Applicants must have a B.A., B.S., or B.F.A. from an accredited institution. For the PhD program, MFA, MS and MA degrees are preferred.The application package must include the following:
MFA in Media Arts:
- UB general online application – select Media Arts Production MFA
- Original transcripts of all undergraduate and graduate course work
- DMS-specific online portfoliothat must include the following:
- Portfolio of creative work: We request that you indicate a URL where your application portfolio of creative work is viewable/readable. You may include video, image documents of any kind provided they are viewable online. You may also include written documents such as essays, theoretical papers, poetry, software/algorithms, equations or fiction. Provide a succinct and prioritized description of how to access and view your materials.Ensure that your materials are viewable across platforms and operating systems (win/mac/linux). We currently support the newest versions of the following browsers: firefox, explorer and safari. Applicants can expect each online portfolio to be reviewed for about 20 minutes.
- Curriculum vitae: An updated curriculum vitae.
- Statement of purpose: A one page description of your interests in research, graduate life, and, if you are applying for a teaching assistantship, your areas of expertise and interests.

- Two writing samples: These texts should demonstrate the candidate’s ability to articulate ideas concisely. Recent publication grade contributions are of particular interest.
- A statement of research interests and abilities: This document should outline the candidate’s approach to performing research in media arts
Letters of recommendation for PhD candidates (names of references are part of the UB general application) should mention why the candidate might be suitable for PhD level research in the arts.
International applicants are required to submit additionally documents as requested in the UB online application. Note that we require proof of satisfactory language proficiency: an official TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) with a minimum score of 85 iBT and 26 for the speaking component.
