Application Process and Entry Requirements

APPLICATION DEADLINE:

Completed applications (with all supporting materials – including portfolios) are due by January 7, 2017.  Priority for departmental scholarship funds and assistantships will be given to applications received by January 7. Applications received after January 7 will only be considered on a space available basis.  Applicants must have a B.A., B.S., or B.F.A. from an accredited institution.  For the PhD program, MFA, MS and MA degrees are preferred.  The application package must include the following:

MFA in Media Arts Production:

  • UB General Online Application – select “Media Arts Production (MFA)” (all supporting materials listed below should be uploaded electronically to the application – letters of recommendation will be uploaded by the recommender)
  • Unoffical Transcripts  of all undergraduate and graduate course work, uploaded directly to your on-line application (accepted applicants will be contacted with instructions for submitting official transcripts).
  • A URL (web link) to a personal website that includes:
      1. Your Portfolio Materials (you may include video, image documents, written documents such as essays, theoretical papers, poetry, software/algorithms (excluding executable code), equations or fiction).  Ensure that your materials are viewable across multiple platforms and operating systems (win/mac/linux). We currently support the newest versions of the following browsers: firefox, explorer and safari.
      2. Your Curriculum Vitae,and
      3. Your Statement of Purpose   This should be a one page description of your  interests in creative production and artistic research.  Please indicate particular courses you plan to take or general resonances you may have with the curriculum, and any specific faculty whose research interests overlap with your own.   If you are applying for a teaching assistantship, please indicate your areas of expertise and skills as they may apply to the curriculum.
  • Three Letters of Recommendation – we will need the e-mail addresses of all recommenders – they will be e-mailed a link by the application system to upload their recommendation letter to the on-line application.
  • $75 Application fee – to be paid electronically.  Application will provide link to pay fee.

PhD in Media Study:

  • UB General Online Application –  select “Media Study (PhD)”
    (all supporting materials below to be uploaded electronically to application – letters of recommendation will be uploaded by the recommender).
  • Unoffical Transcripts of all undergraduate and graduate course work, uploaded directly to your on-line application (accepted applicants will be contacted with instructions for submitting official transcripts).
  • GRE Scores (Institution Code: 0370 SUNY U Buffalo Media Study)
  • A URL (web link) to a personal website that includes:
    1. Your Portfolio Materials (you may include video, image documents, written documents such as essays, theoretical papers, poetry, software/algorithms (excluding executable code), equations or fiction). Ensure that your materials are viewable across platforms and operating systems (win/mac/linux). We currently support the newest versions of the following browsers: firefox, explorer and safari.
    2. Your Curriculum Vitae,
    3. Two Writing Samples: These texts should demonstrate your ability to articulate ideas concisely. Recent publication grade contributions are of particular interest, and
    4. Your Statement Of Research Interests and Abilities: This document should outline your approach to performing research in media arts as well as articulate, to the best of your knowledge, the research topics and questions you anticipate pursuing in the program.  If there are particular faculty whose research interests overlap with yours, or with whom you have had contact regarding your plans, please mention this in the context of your research statement. Please also describe your particular skill sets as they may be applicable to teaching assistantships.

International applicants are required to submit additional documents as requested in the UB online application. Note that we require proof of satisfactory language proficiency: an official TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) with a minimum score of 85 iBT and 26 for the speaking component.
