The Department of Media Study’s mission is to conduct research and to provide educational programs in media production and theory to graduate and undergraduate students of DMS and related departments. Our object/territory of study is media from the late 19th to the 21st centuries (early film to computer-based media). Our focus area is experimental and radical uses of media in the arts and in society at large. Our methods are diverse: historical, theoretical, practice-led and practice-based. DMS is renowned for its pioneering contributions to experimental film, video and sound art, theory and practice. Today, the department adds digital and computational media to these existing strengths with a diversity very few media arts departments can match. DMS provides a community where students can develop their own voices as media researchers and makers. DMS’s objective is to prepare students not just to thrive in a media-saturated world, but to shape it.
